Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, New Zealand

The Whitecliffe BFA Graphic Design programme prepares students for a life-long career in Graphic Design, an industry that offers a broad range of creative and commercial possibilities. Whitecliffe Graphic Design graduates are thinking practitioners with an understanding of both contemporary practice and traditional mythologies of the sphere of Graphic Design. Their broad technical skills mean they are well equipped to explore and articulate a diverse range of visual outcomes for design projects, making them highly sought after by the industry. At Whitecliffe, the Graphic Design department prepares students for a career in design by combining technical skills with a strong conceptual drive. Students explore both traditional and digital media and engage in research, problem solving and visual communication. Tuition across a range of industry standard software is balanced with hands-on projects in illustration, photography and printmaking. Students experiment within areas such as publication design, motion graphics, corporate communications, web design, packaging design and advertising. These are supported by topics that explore key aspects of Graphic Design practice including art direction, brand identity and design theory. Students develop industry contacts and professional skills through internships, exhibitions, and by working on live briefs. All lecturers are active researchers and practising designers.
