Typography Theory Practice
Conference at Leeds Beckett University, Saturday 19 October 2024 Organised by Fraser Muggeridge Reviewed by Simon Esterson
Fraser Muggeridge is a busy guy: exhibitions about book spines, visiting lecturer almost everywhere, but also heading a studio that designs for Tate and Jeremy Deller (see Eye 100). So his idea of a one-day conference examining typography as theory and practice is a mirror of his own preoccupations. In Paul Luna’s keynote and Muggeridge’s intro there was discussion about what typography is, but it also became clear for this event what typography is not – it’s not people showing portfolios, nor is it the latest variable font.

This was a great coming-together of designers, tutors and students from all over Europe, an audience keen to take a brief but tightly focused view of all aspects of typography, research and practice. For me, the most memorable talk was Abeera Kamran’s on Urdu newspaper design. The talks are now online (typographytheorypractice.xyz), but for the really enriching experience of chats between talks, in corridors, you should be there. The 2025 conference is on Saturday 25 October. Book now.
