magCulture curates Eye

In anticipation of magCulture live on Thu 7 Nov 2019, founder Jeremy Leslie has selected five articles from Eye’s huge archive

Eye is Media Partner for magCulture Live, and to anticipate the conference (formerly known as ModMag) to be held on Thursday 7 November 2019, magCulture founder Jeremy Leslie has selected five items about editorial design and magazines from Eye’s extensive online archive.

New York, Fukt, Gal-Dem, The New York Times Magazine, It’s Freezing in LA! and Civilization, six of the titles represented by speakers at magCulture Live on 7 Nov 2019.

• Bertie Brandes will be talking about her work with Richard Turley on his Civilization newspaper (see Simon Esterson’s interview with Turley about Bloomberg Businessweek in Eye 80).

Bloomberg Businessweek cover, 23 May 2011. Creative director Richard Turley told Grids, the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) blog: ‘A cover should just be surprising … I’m happy if it looks a little removed from what people would imagine a business magazine to look like.’ Cover image: Gordon Magnin.

• Jody Quon will show how photos have the power to change the world, with examples from her role as New York magazine’s photography director (see Eye 96).

New York magazine, 27 July – 9 August 2015. Portraits: Amanda Demme. This influential cover was the result of months of research and writing initiated by photography director Jody Quon, who cold-called six of the women who had come forward to accuse comedian Bill Cosby of assault. After publication, the vacant seat on the cover inspired the hashtag, #theemptychair, a symbol for yet unheard victims of sexual assault. See ‘Looking at magazines looking at themselves’.

• In ‘Browsing, or reading’, the Critique column in Eye 92, Rick Poynor considers magCulture’s role in the global resurgence of indie magazines. ‘Leslie takes obvious pride,’ writes Poynor, ‘in making titles available that cannot be found anywhere else in London. He specially imported copies of The California Sunday Magazine, which is brilliantly designed, and he has a pile of back issues of ILIntelligence in Lifestyle – from Italy, which cites 1960s trailblazers such as Town and Twen as influences.’
