Summer 2002

A daily record

This year the American Institute of Graphic Arts presented the NYT a special award for its innovative ‘A National Challenged’ supplement which reported on the aftermath of 11 September. This report includes key spreads and covers from the supplement. Tom Bodkin, NYT design director, recalls the decisions and experiences behind the publication of these pages

Staff at The New York Times were numb with horror as the terrible events of 11 September 2001 unfolded before them. But, as journalists, their reaction to the tradegy was allied to a strong instinct to do their job. Earlier this year the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) acknowledged their work by giving the paper a special award for its innovative ‘A Nation Challenged’ section – a supplement to the main paper that appeared daily from 18 September to 31 December 2001.
